Monday Musical Club awarded six summer music camp scholarships to members of its Junior Club at the annual Junior Scholarship Competition on Sunday, January 29th at the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center. Each scholarship applicant’s performance was judged on accuracy/memory, technique, interpretation and musicality by a team of judges that included Karen Kness, Assistant Professor of Voice at Western Michigan University; Joanna Steinhauser, adjunct string faculty for Kalamazoo College; and Annie Leong, a member of the Michigan Music Teachers Association. Scholarships were awarded to Lily Goldberger, Megan Guldan, Nathanael Mitchell, James Schweitzer, Chiara Thrum, and Kathy Zhang.
Lily Goldberger, the daughter of Peggy and Arnold Goldberger, is a senior at Allegan High School. She is a piano student of Laurie Marshall. Lily received The Monday Musical Club (MMC) Sullivan Scholarship for Piano Collegiate Summer Music Seminar.
Megan Guldan, the daughter of John and Cathleen Guldan, is a sophomore at St. Joseph High School. She is a piano student of Laurie Marshall. Megan received The MMC Parr/Blohm Scholarship for Piano Collegiate Summer Music Seminar.
Nathanael Mitchell, the son of Steven and Wendy Mitchel, is a junior at Lakeshore High School. He is a vocal student of Laurie Marshall. Nathaniel received The MMC Betty Burgoyne Voice Scholarship to the WMU Seminar 2017.
James Schweitzer, the son of Jason and Watchawan Schweitzer, is a 7th grade student and is homeschooled. He is a piano student of Laurie Marshall. James received The MMC Scholarship Fund Award for Piano Collegiate Summer Music Seminar.
Chiara Thrum, the daughter of Marc and Claire Thrum, is a freshman at Lakeshore High School. She is a piano student of Laurie Marshall. Chiara received The MMC Sullivan Scholarship for Piano Collegiate Summer Music Seminar
Kathy Zhang, the daughter of Zheng Zhang and Charlene Jiang, is a sophomore at St. Joseph High School. She is a student of Professor Stephen Shipps at the University of Michigan. Kathy received The MMC Joyce Gouwens Scholarship for Violin to University of Michigan Cambridge International String Academy 2017.
The scholarship winners will perform at Monday Musical’s National Music Week Celebration program on May 1st, 2017, at the Heritage Center.
