Monday Musical Club awarded five summer music camp scholarships to members of its Junior Club at the annual Junior Scholarship Competition on Sunday, January 24th at the Heritage Museum and Cultural Center. Each scholarship applicant’s performance was judged on accuracy/memory, technique, interpretation and musicality by a team of judges from St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Indiana. Scholarships were awarded to Megan Guldan, Nathanael Mitchell, Avery Shepherd, Chiara Thrum, and Kathy Zhang.
Megan Guldan, daughter of John and Cathleen Guldan and a freshman at St. Joseph High School, was awarded the Sullivan Scholarship for Piano to the Western Michigan University (WMU) Seminar 2016. Megan performed Sinfonia XI in g minor, BWV 797 (three-part invention) by Johann Sebastian Bach, and Etude in D major, Op. 46 No. 12 “Shimmering Waters” by Stephen Heller for the competition. She is a student of a Laurie Marshall and serves as the Second Vice President of the Junior Club.
Nathanael Mitchell, son of Steven and Wendy Mitchell and a sophomore at Lakeshore High School, was awarded the Betty Burgoyne Voice Scholarship to the WMU Seminar 2016. Nathanael sang If Music Be the Food of Love by Henry Purcell, Per La Gloria d’adorarvi by Giovanni Battista Bononcini, and The Secret by Gabriel Faure’. He is a student of Laurie Marshall and is the First Vice President of the Junior Club.
Avery Shepherd, daughter of Julia Shepherd, is a freshman at St. Joseph High School. She was awarded the Parr/Blohm Scholarship for Violin to WMU Seminar 2016. Avery performed Presto from Sonata no.1 in g minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, and Violin Concerto in G Major by Joseph Haydn. She is a student of Li Wang and is the Recording Secretary of the Junior Club.
Chiara Thrum is the daughter of Marc and Claire Thrum and an 8th grade student at Lakeshore Middle School. Chiara received the Special Fund Scholarship for Piano to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Chiara performed Invention in c minor, BWV 773 (two-part invention) by Johann Sebastian Bach, and Venetian Gondola Song, Op 19, No 6, U78 by Felix Mendelssohn. She is a student of Laurie Marshall and is the Junior Club Treasurer.
Kathy Zhang, the daughter of Zheng Zhang and Charlene Jiang, is a freshman at St. Joseph High School. Kathy was awarded the Joyce Gouwens Scholarship for Violin to the University of Michigan 3-week Center Stage Strings Program. Kathy performed Rondo in C Major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Melodie from Orfeo ed Euridice by Christoph Willibald von Gluck. She is a student of Professor Stephen Shipps at the University of Michigan and serves as the Community Service Chair of the Junior Club.
The scholarship winners will perform at Monday Musical’s National Music Week Celebration program on May 2, 2016, at the Heritage Center.
The Monday Musical Junior Club is dedicated to the enrichment of music students by providing an opportunity to polish their performance skills and learn from professional artist-educators. The Club meets the fourth Saturday morning September through November and January through April.
