KELLY YOAKAM, M.A.
Kelly is a professional harpist—teaching and performing in mid-Michigan for nearly three decades. As a child, she studied piano for eleven years and played violin in high school and college.
She has a master’s degree in musicology from Michigan State University, where she was awarded a fellowship to do research in Ireland. The focus of her study was the legacy of harper Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738). After his death, patriots used his image as an embodiment of Irishness, constructing an Irish identity that united various classes, religions, and races to fight together for independence. There is rarely a performance where Kelly does not play some of his music—a crossover music between Irish harp music and Italian baroque.
In addition to the harp, Kelly is also a Tai Chi Instructor and Wellness Facilitator.
